Bioprospecting for Anti-COVID-19 Interventions From African Medicinal Plants: A Review

The emergence of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that emanated from Wuhan in China 2019 has become a global concern. current situation warrants ethnomedicinal drug discovery and development for delivery phytomedicines with potential treatment COVID-19. aim this review is to provide detailed evaluation available information on plant species used African traditional medicines antiviral, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, COVID-19 symptoms relieving effects. Literature scientific databases such as Scopus, PubMed, Google scholar, Journals OnLine (AJOL), Science Direct, Web were review. A total 35 38 reviewed plants demonstrated wide range antiviral activities. Bryophyllum pinnatum, Aframomum melegueta, Garcinia kola, Sphenocentrum jollyanum, Adansonia digitata, Sutherlandia frutescens, Hibiscus sabdariffa, Moringa oleifera, Nigella sativa possess combination Nine, 13, 10 representing 23.7%, 34.2%, 26.3% studied had activity 3 other activities, 2 one pharmacological alone, respectively. reported be relatively safe at subchronic toxicity level, except 2. study provides baseline toxicity, chemical components 9 medicinal thereby making candidates further investigation effectiveness against
